ignored her. Something burst in me at that moment. I don’t know if it was the injustice Patina had endured that grated on me the most, or the fact that even with all she’d accomplished, the Rajah wouldn’t acknowledge her existence.

“I walked up to him and I said, ‘Surely you know of Patina, who is one of our most accomplished empaths.’

“His face became impassive and he said to me, ‘You overstep yourself. That one no longer exists in our society.’

“Patina left after that day. I don’t know where she went or what became of her.

“Danni will go into heat soon and she will not be able to resist her sexual desires once her cycle begins to peak. You must promise me that no matter what happens, you will protect her from herself. Danni must be bonded before she has intercourse.”

Sirus rubbed his forehead with the back of his hand. “Marissa, I learned a long time ago that if a woman wants to have sex…well, she’s going to have sex. There must be ways to prevent pregnancy and protect Danni from exclusion in the tigran society.

Aren’t there drugs that she can take to prevent conception if needed?”

“We do not have the drugs to prevent contraception for Danni—tigran physiology is very complex and the drugs used by wolfan or humans will not work. We carried nothing like that on board our ship because we never expected that we’d be the ones to care for Danni.”

“Are there alternatives to drugs? Can’t Alexander implant an IUD?”

“No. Tigran women typically have a high infection rate from use of such devices.

Nor can we temporarily sterilize her. Should we do so before she goes through her awakening, it may very well affect her development into full womanhood.”

Frustrated, Sirus leaned forward, his hands clasped tightly together. “Marissa, I will do my best, but keep in mind that I’m also susceptible to her pheromones. Danni’s already hard enough for me to resist.”

Her eyes bulged out and she slammed down the cup of tea she’d been drinking daintily just moments before. Tea and pieces of her most priceless Earth china exploded over Sirus. “This isn’t a request—you have no choice. I don’t care if you have to shove a couple of barnips up your nose. You’re just going to have to find a way to cope with this. If you wind up having to marry her yourself to do it, you’re going to damn well marry her, and that’s it!”

Sirus brushed off the bits of china that had landed on him. The tea had already soaked into his trousers. He bit back the smile that threatened to break loose. Marissa was good at making her point.

Sirus agreed with her and intended to protect Danni—even from herself, if needed.

“Danni means a lot to me, too, Marissa. I promise I’ll do my best to watch over her. If she goes into heat, I’ll find a way to take care of her. She won’t wind up becoming another Patina.”
